Donating online for the first time? Seven checks that separate a genuine Indian NGO from a fake one — registrations, receipts, reporting and red flags.
Read story6:00 AM. The shamiana goes up. Tables for registration, two doctor stations, a B.P.-and-sugar corner, an eye-screening desk and the medicine counter. Volunteers arrive rubbing sleep from their eyes, carrying flasks of chai.
8:00 AM. The first patients are already waiting — mostly elderly people who came before the queue, because queues have not been kind to them in life.
The morning rush
10:30 AM. Ninety patients registered. The most common findings, as always: undiagnosed high blood pressure and blood sugar. People who have felt "thoda kamzor" for years finally have a name for it — and a month's medicines in their hand, free.
1:00 PM. A volunteer's favourite moment: an elderly woman gets her first-ever eye screening, tries the trial lenses, and reads a signboard across the road. She laughs like a child and immediately asks to look at everything.
Why camps matter
A camp is not a hospital. But it is a door. For every 300 patients, we typically find 15–20 who need serious follow-up — and our referral support walks with them to the next step. Early detection at a free camp has, quite literally, saved lives that a paid clinic visit would have been too expensive to save.
4:00 PM. The last patient — number 297 — collects her medicines. The shamiana comes down faster than it went up. Everyone is exhausted, and everyone is already asking: "Agla camp kab hai?"
